 Results: August 31, 2012

The 680th edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown came to you from the Resch Center in Green Bay, WI. After getting laid out with the RKO by Randy Orton last week, “Mr. Money-in-the-Bank” would certainly be looking for revenge as Dolph Ziggler would go one-on-one with “The Viper” on SmackDown. Also, with Night of Champions just a few weeks away, what will happen between World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus and the #1 Contender for the gold, Alberto Del Rio?

  • Kaitlyn def. Natalya by roll-up.
  • Non-Title: Sheamus def. Damien Sandow by intentional count-out.
  • The Prime Time Players def. Tyson Kidd & Justin Gabriel by Darren Young pinning Justin Gabriel following the double knee gutbuster.

Detailed Results
Three weeks before he defends the World Heavyweight Title against Alberto Del Rio at Night of Champions, the show kicks off with World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus, who says that, before he gets down to business, he wants to take the time to acknowledge one of the toughest men he has ever fought, Triple H. Sheamus says that he had his very first WrestleMania match against Triple H and, regardless of what Triple H’s future holds, he has earned his respect as well as the fans’ respect. Sheamus continues that Triple H is the “embodiment of a champion”, something that Alberto Del Rio is not. Before the champion can continue, Sheamus is interrupted by “The Intellectual Savior of the Masses” Damien Sandow, who says he is out there to “help” Sheamus because Sheamus is as “ignorant” as he is enormous. Sandow reminds everyone that Triple H led DX in an assault on him on the 1,000th episode of RAW. Sheamus says the moment was “great” and Sandow calls Sheamus an “ignorant, spewing hooligan”, saying that Sheamus drags the fans further and further into their own “ignorance” and “ineptitude”. Sandow continues, saying that Sheamus brings “disgrace and dishonor” to his Irish ancestors, but Sheamus interrupts and says that they would all love to listen to Sandow, but they have lives. Sheamus then dares Sandow to come into the ring and insult him to his face, but Sandow says that the World Heavyweight Champion is “unworthy” of his time. Sandow then says that he has saved the fans from the “intellectual thrashing” they were about to receive. The self-professed “martyr” was then ready to make his exit, but SmackDown General Manager Booker T comes out, saying that no one wants to see an “intellectual thrashing”, but they do want to see a “physical thrashing”. The GM then announces that, for the first time ever, Damien Sandow will go one-on-one with Sheamus!

For the first time since suffering a concussion at the hands of The Miz at SummerSlam, Rey Mysterio was in action on SmackDown as “The Master of the 619” went one-on-one with a familiar foe in the mask-obsessed Cody Rhodes. Yet again, Cody Rhodes’ mask obsession would cost him a victory as Rhodes would try to remove Rey Mysterio’s mask, but Rey counters into a roll-up, picking up the win. After the match, Rhodes would attack Mysterio, trying to remove Rey’s mask, but Sin Cara comes to Rey’s aid as the two high flyers get the better of Rhodes before Mysterio hits the 619 on Rhodes. Sin Cara then presents one of his masks, putting it on Rhodes!

The Assistant to the SmackDown General Manager, Eve, is a guest on commentary as the #1 Contender for the Divas Title, Kaitlyn, went one-on-one with Natalya. In the end, it was Kaitlyn catching Natalya with a roll-up to pick up the win. In her first Divas Title match ever, can Kaitlyn dethrone Layla as the Divas Champion at Night of Champions?

Following a confrontation earlier in the show, SmackDown General Manager Booker T would order “The Intellectual Savior to the Masses” Damien Sandow to go one-on-one with World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus in a non-title match. During the match, Damien Sandow would find himself on the wrong end of a Sheamus beating, prompting the “martyr” to flee the ring, taking the count-out loss!

After they were involved in a multi-team brawl backstage, The Prime Time Players would face Tyson Kidd & Justin Gabriel on SmackDown. In the end, It was Darren Young hitting his patented double knee gutbuster on Justin Gabriel en route to picking up the win for The Prime Time Players.

Interviewer and commentator Josh Mathews then appears in the ring to interview the #1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Title at Night of Champions, Alberto Del Rio. Mathews begins to ask his first question, but Del Rio jumps in, saying that he did not only defeat Randy Orton last week, he made Orton tap out. Del Rio says that he intends to do the same thing to Sheamus at Night of Champions and become the World Heavyweight Champion. Mathews then asks how Del Rio responds to Sheamus getting the better of him every time they meet in the ring. Del Rio then says that, what Kane did to the commentator at SummerSlam was nothing compare to what he is going to do to Mathews right now! Before Del Rio can bully Mathews, Kane makes his entrance, which causes the ring to empty as Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez, not to mention Josh Mathews, flee the ring. Kane then reveals that, as part of his anger management therapy, he is out there to apologize to Josh Mathews for his actions at SummerSlam. “The Big Red Monster” then thanks Mathews for being part of his recovery. The Senior Advisor to the GM, Theodore Long, then comes out, informing Del Rio that he will go one-on-one with Kane!

Per the orders of SmackDown General Manager of Booker T, the #1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Title, Alberto Del Rio, would go one-on-one with “The Big Red Monster” Kane. During the match, Ricardo Rodriguez would interfere in the match, allowing Alberto Del Rio to take advantage, hitting the Back Stabber on Kane en route to picking up the win. After the match, Kane tries his best to control his anger, but the anger gets the better of Kane as “The Big Red Monster” exits the ring. Michael Cole and Josh Mathews try to flee the announce position, but Kane was able to get his hands on Mathews as Kane tosses the helpless commentator around ringside before planting Mathews with a chokeslam in the middle of the ring, with Kane apologizing for his attack every step of the way!

Then it was time for the main event as, after being laid out with the RKO by Randy Orton last week, “Mr. Money-in-the-Bank” Dolph Ziggler went one-on-one with “The Viper” Randy Orton. In the end, it was Randy Orton hitting the RKO on Dolph Ziggler en route to picking up the win over “Mr. Money-in-the-Bank”.
